What are great reasons to sell digital products?
Selling digital products is now one of the greatest ways to make money online. Read the reasons why, and I’m sure you’ll agree.
- Low overhead costs – Digital products do not require physical inventory or shipping costs.
- High profit margins – Since there are no manufacturing or shipping costs, the profit margins for digital products tend to be much higher than for physical products.
- Easy to distribute – Digital products can be distributed easily and quickly over the internet, eliminating the need for physical stores or shipping.
- Scalability
- Passive: once you create a great digital product, little to no further work is needed.
If this isn’t the dream of passive income, I wonder what is!
You do not need previous experience and you don’t need to be a graphic designer to do this. Although some tutorials can help for professional designs.
And if you’re busy without much time to dedicate to a side business? This is just ideal.
Products you can create with Canva + Midjourney AI
There are so many digital products you can create. It all depends on your interest.
Some product examples that rack in thousands of sales online include:
- Children’s colouring books
- Adult’s colouring books
- Digital sticker
- Bottle wraps
- ClipArts
- Wall Art
- Resumes
- Home decor
- Digital planners
- Mock-ups
- Print on demand designs
- Digital papers
- Calendar templates
This list is not exhaustive and so many of these have subcategories. For example within children’s coloring books, you can create abstract patterns, fantasy characters, animals, means of transport, food, numbers, educational patterns etc.
The opportunities are fantastic!
Another example – digital planners. You can create meal planners, habit trackers, weight tracker, daily trackers, monthly trackers, diet trackers etc.
It all really depends on what you find interesting to create.
The good thing is, with Midjourney AI, you can create templates and digital items in minutes. So you have time to explore different products and to find out what works for you.
Now let’s talk a bit about Midjourney AI before I go into product creation and making sales.
What is Midjourney AI?
Simply put, MidJourney is an AI-powered system that creates images from text.
You describe what you want to draw and it produces it.

Just head over to midjourney Ai and spend some time playign aorund, you will be amazed!
Getting your drawing to be the way you want it is not always straight forward, you have to be very explicit with your description. But I’m here to share the prompts I use to get you going.
So you may be wondering, if Midjourney does all the creating, where does Canva come in.
I really love Canva, it’s such a versatile tool.
Midjourney produces the art. Canva puts it in a format that you can sell it.
You can take your image from Midjourney to Canva, and convert it to the right size for use. You can also get rid of unwanted elements in your design using Canva. Midjourney often includes gibberish text in some templates/products. Like the spelling of ‘telephone’ in this wall paper I created.
So you’ll need a graphic software like Canva to get rid of unwanted text in your final product.
Also if you have created an ebook you want to sell. Midjourney can create the cover page, and you use the free e-book templates and layouts in Canva to design your book.
There is just so much you can accomplish and the only thing that will limit you is your mind and creativity.
If you’re a seasoned designer, you can certainly swap Canva with any pro design software such as Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator. But for the purpose of this post, i’ll focus on Canva.
Where to sell your digital products
Thanks to third- party market places such as Etsy, you can easily list and sell the digital products you create online. Many sellers love Etsy, and for good reason.
It is easy to set up. It also comes with traffic of buyers which is good for making sales.
However we’ve all heard the dreaded complain about the competition on market places. So that’s why it’s important to sell across various platforms to maximise your audience reach.
Sell on social media using digital sales platforms
With Koji, SendOwl or Gumroad you can sell any digital product on social media. All you need is to create an account, follow set up instructions, upload your product and get a link you can share on social media.
People who click your link are taken to a page where they can download your file, after payment has been made.
Sell on your own website
Many digital product sellers do this. And to be honest, cross posting a product you have created on Etsy to your website or vice versa is not the hard part. The ‘hard’ part was creating the awesome product.
Advantages of selling on your own website
No fees eating into your profit margin, you have more control over your brand and can customize your website to reflect your unique style and personality.
If you already have a website, you can add a woocommerce plug in. You can also use Shopify, Wix or Ecwid. These are great and easy for setting up online stores.
How to promote your products and make money with Canva
You can promote on social media. Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram are all great options.
Alternatively, if you are an established blogger with an email list, you can promote to your email subscribers.
You particularly need to think of promotion if you plan to sell on your own website.
However, third-party sites like Etsy would often send you traffic. The sales I make on my Etsy store are all due to organic traffic from Etsy. People come on Etsy to search for a term that describes my product, and my product is shown to them. That’s the benefit of market places.
Then if you have some budget, you can try paid ads on facebook or pinterest.
I have not personally tried ads so not sure how much of an impact ads can have.
But I have definitely bought some digital products after seeing their engaging ads on Facebook. Thus I believe ads are worth trying if you can afford it.
How much can you make selling digital products.
This is not a get rich quick scheme. I sold only $300 worth of products in my first two months on Etsy.
So believe me when I say it does take time. There are people with 100,000s of digital product sales on Etsy. You can type in ‘digital templates’ and scroll through stores for inspiration.
So the potential to make life-changing money is there. You just need to choose a niche or product that is in high demand and put in the right effort to market it.
Patience will also help you loads in the business of online selling. Things may be dull one day, and tomorrow you have a viral social media post and your sale goes bunkers.
You never know when this will happen, so stay consistent.
How can you come up with new product ideas.
Coming up with digital product ideas can be a fun and creative process. It is actually very important to find new ideas because the market can easily get saturated with existing ideas.
This is the key thing you want to do:
Check out current trends: you can do this with the following steps.
STEP 1: Type ‘digital product’s or ‘templates’ or ‘coloring pages’ in the search bar of Etsy (Creative Market, Amazon)
STEP 2: Set the filter to ‘best sellers’.
Now you see what people are buying the most.
The goal is not to copy but to see how you can adapt those designs to your products.
For Etsy, an even better tool for research is everbee. It gives so much insight on what is selling, the number of sales, revenue, and how long the product has been on the market.
With such insight you can come up with new ideas fairly quickly to add to your store.
Now let’s finish up this post with the fun part!
